Cartridge filters can replace bag filters for dedusting applications in which the quantity of dust is relatively modest.

Particulate entrained in the fumes are captured on filter media then the air laden with pollutant particles enters the lower section of the filter where initial inertia separation occurs due to the change in air velocity; the air then flows through the filter fabric on which a layer of particulate is deposited; the particulate layer itself functions as a filter medium.

The accumulation of particulate reduces the efficiency of the filter and so the filter is equipped with a cleaning system.
